New Principal Mentoring Program
Grant Requirements
The Illinois New Principal Mentoring Program (PA94-1039) was an outgrowth of Senate Bill 860. This Act was approved in October, 2007 and immediately implemented throughout the State of Illinois. All first year, inexperienced principals are required to participate in a mentoring program. Assistant principals with five years of experience in the same district who are promoted to their first full-time principalship are exempt. Kane County is an approved entity for this program serving numerous first year principals. As an entity, Kane County is required to fulfill the following obligations to its new principals:
The Kane County Regional Office of Education will:
- Provide support for new principals in the development of their professional growth plan
- Enlist opportunities for ongoing, reflective conversations regarding issues of concern connected with their work as a principal
- Provide feedback with respect to the organization and management of the school
- Attend a minimum of at least one faculty meeting as an observer
- Review with the principal all aspects of the evaluation cycle
- Complete a minimum of 83 hours during the school year via phone, email, workshops or school visits
- Support the professional development of new principals by providing relevant and meaningful networking and staff development activities throughout the school year
Mentors are assigned to mentees for the length of the new principal’s first year contract.
